When Knowledge Arrives Too Late — and Why It Matters
When I was young, there was a rather frightening rumor circulating in my neighborhood: the water in Canada is “hard,” and drinking or using it would make you lose your hair and eventually go bald. It sounded terrifying. At the same time, I instinctively doubted it — I couldn’t quite believe that water alone could be the main cause of hair loss.
“ You’d better install a water filtration system at home to soften the water,” a salesperson once urged me, trying to convince me to purchase a very expensive system for my place. Fortunately, I have a habit of checking everything online before making big purchases. Like most millennials and Gen Z, I tend to research thoroughly before spending money. We’re generally less susceptible to marketing scare tactics than older generations, largely because we have the tools and skills to verify information ourselves.
It turned out that hard water does not directly cause hair loss. Hard water means water with a high mineral content — mainly calcium and magnesium. These minerals can build up on the hair and scalp, making hair feel dry and brittle, which can lead to breakage. But breakage is not the same as hair loss. Instead of spending thousands of dollars on a so-called “magic” water system, something as simple as using a proper hair conditioner can often prevent dryness and solve the problem.
This small experience reflects a much larger reality: we live in an age where the internet is flooded with information — much of it conflicting. Yet today, with AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini, our ability to understand our environment and our health is growing exponentially. For most of human history, people became sick or even died without knowing why.
Hundreds of years ago, between the 15th and 18th centuries, sailors embarked on long voyages in search of trade and treasure. Many of these journeys ended tragically: some ships lost 30–50% of their crew to a mysterious illness. Affected sailors suffered from extreme fatigue, swollen and bleeding gums, and severe weakness. Without treatment, they could die within weeks or months.
In 1747, a Scottish naval doctor named James Lind conducted what is now considered one of the first clinical trials. He discovered that sailors who consumed citrus fruits recovered dramatically within days. Yet despite this clear evidence, it took naval authorities more than 40 years to act. Only in 1795 did the British Royal Navy finally mandate daily rations of lemon or lime juice for sailors. Today, we know this disease as scurvy, caused by vitamin C deficiency. Ironically, vitamin C itself was not identified until 1932, and it was only isolated and synthesized in 1937.
As Homo sapiens, we often learn lessons the hard way. Even after hundreds of thousands of years, much about nature and our environment remains unknown. The good news, however, is that we are living in one of the best eras in human history. Science and technology now allow us to understand our bodies and our surroundings faster and more deeply than ever before.
With continuous discoveries from research and clinical studies, we are making real progress against some of the world’s deadliest diseases, including cancer and AIDS. The pace of medical innovation has accelerated dramatically. The COVID-19 vaccine was developed in just 11 months, while influenza vaccines took around a decade to refine, and the smallpox vaccine took many decades to develop. Beyond treatment, we are also learning how to prevent disease by understanding our environment and maintaining better overall health.
A recent documentary from CBC particularly intrigued me: “The cancer-causing gas hiding in millions of homes.” It explores radon and its health impacts on Canadian families. The story follows a man who lived an active life as a golfer for years, in a country known for its clean air and water. He was a non-smoker with no family history of lung cancer, making his diagnosis difficult to comprehend.
The culprit turned out to be radon: a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless radioactive gas that seeps from the soil into homes and buildings. Because radon can accumulate indoors without detection, many Canadians are unknowingly exposed to high levels. Long-term exposure damages lung tissue and significantly increases the risk of lung cancer, especially for people who spend many years living in affected homes.
Today, about 6% of lung cancer deaths in Canada are estimated to be caused by radon exposure — more than 3,000 deaths each year. Yet it wasn’t until the 2010s that governments and health authorities, including Health Canada’s National Radon Program, began actively promoting testing, public awareness, and home mitigation. One can only imagine how many people might still be breathing hazardous air indoors if this connection had never been identified.
Every minute of every day, hundreds of thousands of studies and research projects are conducted around the world. Vitamin D matters in countries like Canada with long winters. Omega-3 intake supports eye and cardiovascular health. And we’re learning why we age—and how we might slow that process. The more we understand our bodies and our environment, the longer and healthier our lives can become.
History shows us that ignorance is rarely harmless — it is often deadly. From scurvy on the open seas to radon hidden in modern homes, the greatest threats to our health are not always visible or intuitive. Yet unlike past generations, we now have access to unprecedented knowledge, tools, and scientific insight. The responsibility that comes with this era is clear: to question assumptions, seek evidence, and act before preventable harm occurs. In doing so, we don’t just live longer — we live wiser.
